Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Seventh Edition. Boards (HB) in near fine condition with only some foxing to top page edges. In very good dust jacket with small enclosed tears top and bottom of spine and small one quarter inch missing from top of spine. Boldly inscribed and dated by Pappy Boyington first inner page. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (1912-1988) was initially a P-40 Warhawk fighter pilot with the legendary "Flying Tigers" (1st American Volunteer Group) in the Republic of China Air Force in Burma. In September 1942 he rejoined the Marine Corps and deployed to the South Pacific, flying Marine F4U Corsairs. In September 1943, he took command of Marine Corps fighter squadron VMF-214 (the "Black Sheep" squadron.) During his squadron's first tour of combat duty, he shot down 14 enemy fighters in 32 days. By December 27, his record had climbed to 25. Shot down and held as POW for more than a year, in 1945 he received both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. 315 pages. Inscribed by Author(s).

7th Edition. Hardbound 8vo (8.75 inches tall) 315 pages. Description: This copy is Signed and dated (July 15, 1984), with a personalized inscription by the author. Boyington was a Medal of Honor winner, and was awarded a Navy Cross for his achievements while leading the Black Sheep squadron in the South Pacific. Pappy spent the last twenty months of the war in a Japanese prison camp and had a troubled career. He was brought into the public eye and fancy by Robert Conrad's role in the 1970s television series. This is a novel. The only printed date is the original 1960 copyright, this seventh printing (which the publisher has called ''edition'') will have been published about the time of the author's inscription. Note: while I believe calling this a seventh ''edition'' is somewhat misleading, the jacket art on this edition is nothing at all like the original. Note that Wilson Press does not identify themselves as publisher here except for printing ''Wilson'' on both book and jacket spine. The title page is just reprinted as it appeared in the original Bobbs-Merrill edition. Wilson Press also republished Boyington's war memoirs, Baa Baa Black Sheep. BINDING/CONDITION: red boards with black spine text; a Very Good book, with a Good dust jacket. The jacket is faded at the spine (this solid red jacket is prone to spine fading). ISBN: B000WIVQ9O.
