Riedizione di Amsterdam di questa fortunata opera settecentesca sui giochi di anonimo autore (nella traduzione inglese essa viene attribuita all'abate Bellecour). Nell'opera si discorre ampiamente del backgammon (trictrac), degli scacchi, del biliardo, della quadriglia, del picchetto e di una quantità di altri giochi di società, di carte o da tavola in grande voga nel Settecento. La sezione scacchistica e quella sul trictrac sono attribuite al grande Philidor, il massimo giocatore del XVIII secolo. La presente impressione olandese è ampliata sia per quanto riguarda la sezione scacchistica che per quella consacrata al whist, quest'ultima opera di Edmond Hoyle. François André Danica, meglio noto come Philidor (Dreux, 1726-Londra, 1795), fu talentuoso musicista (allievo di Campra, compose musica sacra, un oratorio profano e, soprattutto, briosissime opere comiche che risentirono dell'influsso di Rameau) e, al contempo, fra i massimi scacchisti del XVIII secolo, nonché uno dei primi grandi codificatori moderni degli scacchi (la prima edizione del suo trattato su tale gioco fu edita ad Aix-la-Chapelle nel 1748).
