Gr 9 Up--While books on literary criticism are often requested, this volume will not fill that demand. Of the 14 authors included, only two will be familiar to most teens: Agatha Christie and Daphne Du Maurier. There is no index, so students looking for criticism on Du Maurier's Rebecca, for example, will need to read through all of the excerpts to find pertinent information. Over a third of the pieces have been taken from articles included in Twentieth Century British Literature, also edited by Bloom and which originally took its entries from various works of literary criticism. Each section begins with a biographical sketch of the author, followed by critical excerpts and ending with a bibliography of the writer's works. The best section is on Agatha Christie, which discusses her two main characters, Miss Jane Marple and Hercule Poirot, at length. As an introduction to early 20th-century British women writers, this volume could be a start. Students needing more in-depth analysis will want to go elsewhere.
