Gr 10 Up--While brief biographical material is provided for each of the 14 authors profiled here, the bulk of the book is devoted to critical essays about the women's works. Bloom does not explain why he chose to profile these particular authors, which include Virginia Woolf, Dorothy Sayers, May Sinclair, and Rebecca West, or why he selected the specific critical extracts. The essays, which range from the time of a particular work's original publication to those written today, assess both individual titles and the author's place in literary history. They are in-depth and assume a great deal of background knowledge of the author, her style, and writings. Although there are many sources that contain basic biographical information on female writers, this volume fills a gap in literary criticism for YA audiences. It is appropriate for students who have studied and read these authors and want to conduct a more scholarly investigation.
