Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. New York: Scribners, 1937. First Edition. Near Fine cloth, spine a mite darkened; w/o dustwrapper. Bleiler's Checklist categorizes this as "Biological science fiction; inventions." It is praised by Brian Stableford in "Scientific Romance in Britain 1890-1950," by Clute and Nichols in "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" where it was called "notable and original," while George Locke in the 1995 volume of "Spectrum of Fantasy" dubbed it "Excellent." "Anatomy of Wonder" (1976) calls it "Grimly pessimistic." Tuck in "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy" says it is "considered by many to be a near-classic sf novel." That's a pretty high consensus among hard-core science fiction experts and enthusiasts who herald the book's significance.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. Back in print after an absence of nearly 70 years, the facsimile edition of E. C. Large's novel Sugar in the Air is what we now call a 'mash-up,' made up of scientific research, social satire, and fictional flights of fancy. Sugar in the Air (1937) is a 'scientific romance' in which the idea of extracting sugar from the air is held, for the duration of the book, in suspended disbelief by characters desperate for work in a period of economic recession. A description of the product development and manufacturing process doubles as a critique of capitalism's stewardship of technological progress that suggests alternative production models for today's designers. Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First U.S. edition. Upper corner tips bumped, red top edge coloring faded and spotted in places, else a very good plus copy in gilt-stamped blue cloth; in the original illustrated dust jacket that is near fine showing only modest edge wear. Front flap price of $2.50 intact. Cover art by the author. Ernest Charles Large (1902-1976) was an English industrial chemist, writer, and plant scientist, best known for his book THE ADVANCE OF THE FUNGIi (1940). He wrote several novels of science fiction with SUGAR IN THE AIR being a near classic work considered by Clute and Nichols as "A notable and original science fiction novel." A fantastic satire on contemporary modern science in its application to "big business" as a young engineer invents a method of extracting sugar from the air and the resulting "wild riot of promoting" that follows. Also noted in Locke, Bleiler, Reginald, Stableford, Tuck, and Anatomy of Wonder.
