First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good +. Dust Jacket Condition: Good -. Thomas E. Mails (illustrator). First Edition. Dog Soldiers, Bear Men and Buffalo Women: A Study of Societies and Cults of the Plains Indians, written and illustrated by Thomas E. Mails, was published by Galahad Books in 1973. Not an ex-library copy, this approximately 8 3/4" X 12", 384-page, 35-year-old offering is in VG+/G- condition. The book, at age 35, is still almost like new, crisp and firm, its only flaw being some rather modest yellowing of endpapers front and back as well as pages of text. The dust jacket is another matter, perhaps from doing such an admirable job of protecting its contents. The primary problem is very noticeable shelf wear at the top and bottom edges of jacket's spine as well as at the four points where the inside jacket flaps make their inward folds. Lesser wear is observed along the top and bottom edges of front, and back, cover sections of jacket. Top corner of front inside jacket flap is price clipped, and there are a number of random, smallish, grayish spots on the back jacket cover. A 3/4" X 1" rectangular-shaped, gray area is seen in top-right corner of front jacket cover(from, perhaps, removal of a price label/sticker?). From front/back inside flaps, "During the years between 1750-1850, the Plains Indian nations achieved a way of life rich and sophisticated in its every dimension: religion, heritage, tradition, government, family life, social life, crafts, hunting skills, and warfare. Along with these accomplishments came a profusion of splendid ceremonies, costumes, and regalia ranking with the finest the world has ever seen. The greater part of these by far were directly associated with the warrior societies, civil societies, and cults. It is these societies and cults that [the author] examines closely, with skill and perception, in this handsome and fascinating book. .Illustrated with meticulous pen-and-ink and charcoal drawings and with paintings in glowing color[this offering features ONLY ONE such PAINTING--that which adorns so beautifully the dust jacket's front cover], Dog Soldiers. brings alive for the reader the intricate, inventive beauty of Indian costume and regalia as words alone could not do." Indeed, THE DOMINANT ASPECT of this volume are the dozens upon dozens of exceptional Drawings, many of them full page, that fairly saturate this offering. Also included are Contents Page, Chapter Notes, Bibliography, and, finally, Index of Tribes and Societies(covering such nations as the Blackfoot, Hidatsa, Arapaho, Sioux, Omaha, Crow, Ponca, Cheyenne, among others). If the subject of the culture and life styles of the once powerful Plains Indian nations, primarily between their glory years, 1750-1850, this volume is a must. Thank you!!.
