First Edition
Hardcover. First Edition [1965], so stated. First Edition [1965], so stated. Very Good+ in Fair DJ: The Book shows indications of very careful use: just a touch of wear to extremities; a very faint coffee-like stain at the outside edges of the front and rear endpapers (affects about a half-dozen pages total); the binding leans very slightly, but remains secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tighly bound, showing minor, unobtrusive imperfections but very little wear. The DJ shows moderate wear to the extremities; some scuffing at short tears along the front hinge and less so along the outside edge of the front panel; rodent has gotten to the lower front hinge and nibbled a large chunk from it; else mild overall rubbing; faint soiling to the white background field of the rear panel, which also shows a coffee-like stain to the outside edge of the panel; the price has not been clipped, but has been crossed out and a bookseller's price written in marker pen below it. A three-digit numeral has been written in ink near the upper corner of the front panel. Numerous flaws, but still intact. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 4to. (10.75 x 7.65 x 0.65 inches). 191 pages. Index. Frontispiece illustration profusely illustrated with vintage photographs and a few drawings. Light blue cloth lettered in blue on spine and at the front panel. Pictorial end papers. Hardback with DJ. "Close on the trail of the covered wagon and river boat came the tents, frame shacks, and adobe huts, to be occupied by the men with the little hand presses and big day dreams . with vintage photographs and breezy perceptive writing . offers the story of the editors and printers in 17 states who wielded quills, type sticks and six guns with equal deftness - History? They made it, wrote it and printed it!".
