Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. Jacket by Muriel Nasser (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Jacket sadly tatty, with edge wear, chipping, loss, tears and overall time staining and browning, now largely held together by new film sleeve. Not price clipped ($3.00), bookseller's label to bottom ffep, internally cleanish, tight and square, overall a good reading copy for its age. 242pp, illustrated. In 1914, Swedish American Joe Hill (1879-1915), born Joel Emmanuel Hägglund, also known as Joseph Hillström, the prolific songwriter for the Industrial Workers of the World (also known as the Wobblies), was convicted of murder in Utah and sentenced to death by firing squad, igniting international controversy. Barrie Stavis's play explores an extraordinary life. Hill would become organized labor's most venerated martyr, and a hero to folk singers such as Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. His story shines a beacon on the early twentieth century American experience and exposes the roots of issues critical to the twenty first century. Barrie Stavis (1906-2007), was an American playwright. He wrote several plays about men struggling in the vortex of history. His subjects include scientist Galileo, abolitionist John Brown, and labor leader Joe Hill, written in 1951 and subsequently staged at the Jan Hus Theater, New York in 1958. Quite a scarce book in the UK.
