First Edition, First Printing. Large octavo, 496pp. Black hardcover, title in gilt on spine. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page, with full number line. Signed on the title page "To Colin and Alma / The journey of some more amazing Americans. With affection, Harold Evans / New York 2004." Colin Powell (1937-2021) served as the United States Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, the first African American to hold the post. He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan (1987-1989) and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000, but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021, survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alma Powell. Harold Evans was president and publisher of Random House from 1990 to 1997, and was the primary editor for Colin Powell's memoirs. Evans stated "We are honored that Gen. Powell has chosen Random House to be his publisher," and that his career has been "quite extraordinary." (L.A. Times, 1993).
