Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. (1979), 116pp, index, portrait of Gregg. VG in VG dj. Gregg is remembered for his classic account of the Santa Fe Trail, COMMERCE OF THE PRAIRIES, published in 1844. (See Howes G401; Graff 1659; Wagner-Camp 108). He died six years later, and little was known of him until his notebooks, diaries, and letters were published in the 1940's, with a long biographical essay by Horgan. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Printing, 1979. Volume itself has a white cloth cover with gold lettering on brown on the spine. Dust jacket is protected in an archival quality cover. Dust jacket not price-clipped. The fame of Josiah Gregg rests chiefly on his classic account of the Santa Fe Trail, Commerce of the Prairies (l844). This was a groundbreaking work on the American Southwest. Six years after its publication, Gregg died. Yet little was known of Gregg, the man, until his newly discovered notebooks, diaries, and letters were first published in the 1940's by Paul Horgan. In the present volume, Mr. Horgan presents a revised version of the biographical portrait and adds an analysis of Commerce of the Prairies. A very nice copy.

"Josiah Gregg (19 July 1806 25 February 1850) was an American merchant, explorer, naturalist, and author of Commerce of the Prairies about the American Southwest and Northern Mexico regions. He collected many previously undescribed plants on his merchant trips and during the Mexican American War after which he went to California. He reportedly died of a fall from his mount due to starvation near Clear Lake, California, on 25 February 1850 after a cross-country expedition which fixed the location of Humboldt Bay.
