The narrative focuses on the pioneer generation, on the generation challenged by industrialization in the late nineteenth century, and on those twentieth~century Hoosiers whose experiences ranged from Progressive reform and the Ku Klux Klan to the growth of government power and the homogenization of culture and community. Madison pays particular attention to social, cultural, and economic as well as political issues. The major heroes and villains are placed in full sociohistorical context, from George Rogers Clark, Tecumseh, and William Henry Harrison, to D. C. Stephenson, William Jenner, Matthew Welsh, and Bobby Plump. Providing a broad factual account of Indiana's history, the book also sets out a new analytical and interpretive framework. The author argues that there has always been a distinctive Indiana way. This theme recurs throughout the narrative, particularly in showing how Hoosiers have tended toward moderate response to change. They have usually rejected radical and extreme notions and movements, preferring to savor the comfort and security that come from a respect for tradition and for the achievements of preceding generations. Hoosiers have been especially attached to traditions of individual freedom and limited government. and they have identified with small~town and rural values and with intensely partisan political parties. Always believing themselves to be part of the American mainstream, Indianans have also been proud of their distinctiveness. About the jacket illustration: The Thomas Hart Benton Murals, painted for the State of Indiana exhibit at the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago in 1933~34, represent the history of Indiana from the mound builders to modern times. When the Exhibition ended, the murals were stored in Indianapolis, then presented to Indiana University in 1940. Four panels hang in the University Theatre and two in the auditorium of Woodburn Hall, but the majority are to be found in the Hall of Murals, the entry hall of the Indiana University Auditorium. Depicted here by kind permission of the Indiana University Auditorium is a portion of the west mural, which bears the general title "Industrial Progress." We see the building of a log cabin, the old mill at Spring Mill State Park, and early methods of transportation, including the first railroad, a covered wagon, and a mule~drawn canal boat. Thomas Hart Benton was one of America's best known realist painters of the 1930s. Born in Missouri in 1889, he skillfully captured in his Indiana murals everyday symbols and popular conceptions of the Hoosier past, particularly the veneration of the pioneers.
