He later served as White House Chief of Staff for President Ronald Reagan from 1987-1988 and eventually became the U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2001-2005.

Prior to this, Lugar was the 44th Mayor of Indianapolis, in office from 1968-1976. Lugar's legacy lives on through The Lugar Center, a nonprofit public policy institution he established in 2013 to continue advocating for global issues he focused on while in office.
