"Surveying the growing conservatism and religious revivalism of today's United States, Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert William Fogel sees America in the midst of its 'Fourth Great Awakening.' in his long-awaited book, Fogel contends that the ethical and political crises that currently beset the nation are the most recent manifestations of the recurring effort to bring human institutions into balance with the massive technological changes that drastically transform the economy and periodically destabilize prevailing culture". Book about Egalitarianism. Winner of: Nobel Prize in Economics 1993. (Business, Business, Economics, Morality, Social Behavior).

First edition, first printing, inscribed on the half-title by the author "To Carma, best wishes Robert Fogel 2/23/01". Fogel's "Fourth Great Awakening" refers to the American religious revival of the 1960s and 1970, as mainstream Protestantism weakened and evangelicalism grew. Fogel's interpretation, which proved controversial, places this development as on a par with the previous "Great Awakenings" - the religious movements of the 1730s and 1740s, the movement to end slavery, and the establishment of the welfare state. Fogel won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1993. Octavo. Original black quarter cloth, spine lettered in silver, blue paper sides, blue endpapers. With dust jacket. A fine, unread copy, in the near-fine jacket, trivial rubbing.
