Prestele (1796-1867), although rediscovered only recently by the author, was one of the foremost botanic illustrators of his day, receiving commissions from Asa Gray, John Torrey, and other noted botanists.

4to [31 x 24 cm]; 357 pp, 95 color plates, many other illustrations including full-page, bibliog, index. original cloth, spine title lettering, dust jacket, very fine and clean, as new. Prestele, Bavarian born, moved to Buffalo, New York, where he received commissions from Asa Gray, John Torrey and other leading botanist. His engravings and plates were also used by nurserymen as selling aids. He was one of America's first professional botanical artists. The author has painstakingly created this work, with excellent plates. Appendices include a glossary, checklist of plates for Gray's work, checklist of U. S. Army reports of western expeditions containing Prestele's illustrations, checklist of nurserymen's plates signed or attributed to him. A picture of this book is available on request.
