Ruth Plumly Thompson (27 July 1891 - 6 April 1976) was an American writer of children's stories, best known for writing many novels placed in Oz, the fictional land of L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. An avid reader of Baum's books and a lifelong children's writer, Thompson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While in high school she sold her first fairy tale to St. Nicholas Magazine to which she continued contributing, along with The Smart Set. wizard In 1914 she took a job with the Philadelphia Public Ledger, writing a weekly children's column for the newspaper. Thompson's contributions to the Oz series are lively and imaginative, featuring a wide range of colorful and unusual characters. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Wear to the boards, head and tail of the spine. The boards are shaken and beginning to loosen from the binding, with minor soiling to the boards. Various scuffs and scratches to the boards, but nothing too significant. The cloth on the spine is trying to separate from the binding as well with tears on the edges and thinning of the material. Pages have some tanning areas, shown especially on the endpages. All pages have markings on the numbers near the foot edge of the pages, varying in colors, some are purple and some are orange, but consist of various x's and o's. Otherwise, good. GOOD, AS/IS.

Book is VG or better except that fifty pages or so have the top corner torn away where someone, probably a child marked the place with a tear rather than a dogear. There is some light wear to the book otherwise, but this is a very attractive copy. The jacket appears to be from a later issue and has wear, tape repairs, chips, tears and scuffs. While it is still presentable, it is in the Fair to Good range. This was one of Ruth Plumly Johnson's contributions to the Oz canon and is the first of these books not to have any color illustrations beyond the cover art. ; Cover Art and B&W Drawings; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 306 pages.

Some slight creasing on bottom edges of panels, and top edge of front panel. A few, faint moisture marks on spine. Very slight wear to fore-edges.
