David Sievert Lavender (1910 2003) was an American historian and writer who was one of the most prolific chroniclers of the American West. He published more than 40 books, including two novels, several children's books, and a memoir. Unlike his two prominent contemporaries, Bernard DeVoto and Wallace Stegner, Lavender was not an academic. Much of his writing was influenced by his first-hand practical knowledge of the American West and the historical realities and locations depicted in his books in the mines, on the trails, in the mountains, and on the rivers. Lavender was a two-time nominee for the Pulitzer Prize, and was widely admired by scholars for his accuracy and objectivity. In 1954, Lavender published Bent's Fort, an historic landmark of the American West on the upper Arkansas River in present-day southeastern Colorado. Built by Charles and William Bent, Bent's Fort was a massive private fort that stood until 1849 as the center of trade with the Indians of the central plains. Lavender's history of these men and their role in opening up the southwestern region of North America has been compared to the works of eminent historians such as Francis Parkman and William H. Prescott. First Edition Thus (1954), probably a later printing, as there is no direct statement of First Edition.

Octavo, russet cloth (hardcover), map illus. endpapers, 450 pp. Very Good, with neat former-owner signature; in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: The Bent brothers -- men of indomitable will and courage whose lives were sagas of adventure -- formed the vanguard of American expansion to the West. Bent's Fort -- their great adobe castle on the banks of the Arkansas -- was the focal point of expansion and exploration, of diplomacy among three ambitious nations: the United States, Texas, and Mexico, and of trade with Santa Fe, Taos, and the redskins. This is the first full-length dramatic account of the Bents and their fort -- the fabulous story of a whole era of western history. The story of Bent's Fort is a drama of incredible deeds and incredible dangers, manned by a magnificent cast -- Kit Carson, Blackfoot Smith, Old Bill Williams, Kearny, Fremont, and Tom Fitzpatrick to name only a few. The bloody Pueblo uprising; the heroic march of an Oregon missionary; the battle for New Mexico and the bigger battle to keep it; the exploits of Pegleg Smith, who amputated his own leg, and other mountain men who trapped the lonely hills; tales of stumbling wagon trains lost on the trackless plains -- stories of horror and humor, of unquestioning heroism and constant peril marked the daily life of this fabled fort. The Bents' influence stretched across that untamed land, and the story of Bents Fort is a fascinating human and historical document, a literary feat of painstaking research and interpolation, an epic of the American frontier. Western Americana, American West. yslic.
