The author lived in the Catskills, and the book begins with a chapter on fishing for trout in that region and the Adirondacks, with a chapter on John Cheney, the Adirondack hunter. He then traveled and fished his way through Vermont and New Hampshire, before reaching Quebec, where he fished along the north shore of the St. Lawrence, fishing for salmon on the St. Margaret River, salmon and trout on the Esquemain River ("We had been almost devoured by the black flies"). He went on to Maine, to fish for salmon on the Aroostook and trout on Moosehead Lake, and ends up the trip by catching a large striped bass in Connecticut. Very good.
