A collection of poetry by Felicia Hemans (1793-1835), an English poet who called Wales her home. She received an education in classical and literary studies and was fluent in Welsh, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, and French. She published her first poems when she was the age of 14. Hemans was held in high regard by many of her contemporaries including Percy Bysshe Shelley and William Wordsworth. Her work has been described as having lyricism and conveying Victorian sentimentality. Many of her poems herein address themes of love, loss, and death, but others represent a wide variety of different subjects. This book is divided into three parts, "Songs of the Affections" (c. thirty-one poems), "Miscellaneous Poems" (c. 116 poems), and "National Lyrics" (seven poems). The following are excerpts from some of the poems. Excerpt from "A Spirit's Return" in "Songs of Affection": "I sat beneath that planet--I had wept / My woe to stillness, every night-wind slept; / A hush was on the hills; the very streams / Went by like clouds, or noiseless founds in dreams ." Excerpt from "The Sea-Bird Flying Inland" in"Miscellaneous Poems": "Thous hast done well, O thou bright sea-bird! / There is joy where the song of the lark is heard, / With the dancing of waters through copse and dell, / And the bee's low tune in the fox-glove's bell. / Thou hast done well:--Oh! the seas are lone, / And the voice they send up hath a mournful tone; / A mingling of dirges and wild farewells, / Fitfully breathed through its anthem-swells." Excerpt from "The Fall of d'Assas" in "National Lyrics": "Alone through gloomy forest-shades / A soldier went by night; / No moonbeam pierced the dusky glades, / No star shed guiding light. / Yet on his vigil's midnight round / The youth all cheerly pass'd; / Uncheck'd by aught of boding sound / That mutter'd in the blast.".

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Ashenden (Author-Photographer) (illustrator). First Edition, First Thus. Text/Bright, clean, As New. Pale blue linen boards/VG; Strong & sound, showing discoloration, & edge rubs showing light soiling. DJ/VG, intact with edge rubs, closed tear by front of upper spine, and discoloration & soiling to back; under mylar. Light soiling to all leading text edges. Autobiography/memoir of a young mountaineer and, perhaps more truly, a book of the romance of majestic mountains. Ashenden is the pseudonym of Sidney Edward Payn Nowill. Of poor health in youth, Ashenden did not start mountain climbing until the age of 25; this book (portions previsely published in magazines) was written when the author was but 32 years old. The superb photographs are the author's own. It is the story of progress and growth --- from the Nimph Dag on to the Bithynian Olympus, Pennine Alps, Taurus Range, Dolomites, and his ascent of the Matterhorn while ill. Asheden says of mountaineering, ". there is no other pursuit which enables its followers to experience the fulfilment in use of all the human faculties: physical, artistic, and spiritual. Its enjoyment depends . upon his attitude mind", and that it is in the world of spirit that the mountaineer recives his deepest satisfaction for ".the peaks in their glory supply a challenge to the spirit" and allows transcendence from earthly bonds. An eloquent romance.
