(price-clipped) [nice clean book, no discernible wear; jacket shows some light rubbing and very faint soiling, but would rate Near Fine if not for the price-clipping]. (B&W and color photographs; facsimiles) "Here is a book that ranges through all aspects of modern living, examining man-made things, discussing why they look as they do. The more than 250 illustrations come from museums, art galleries, picture archives, industry, science, advertising, the mass media, and artists and designers all over the country. . . . The book observes no artificial limits, but embraces design as a universal function of all man-made objects and shows how these objects are clues to the confusing, rapidly changing world we live in." 0-289-27985-2.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Lydia Gershey (illustrator). First Edition. [a very nice copy with no discernible wear, completely unmarked except for a small bookseller's rubber-stamped name at the bottom corner of the front endpaper; the jacket is a little bit faded along the outer folds, with some very light surface-rubbing and a touch of dog-earing at the top of the spine]. (B&W photographs, technical diagrams, tables) A historical and (very) technical look at the development of 3-D filmmaking -- but also intended to point "the way toward a 3-D revival," by way of the author's presentation of "a coherent system of stereoscopic cinematography," based on "thoroughly original concepts [that] are theoretically sound, yet based entirely on practical experience," namely his "six years of experimentation, design work, and filmmaking." This all, of course, was more than forty years ago, and so whether Lipton's proposals have been adopted or discarded (and I am not personally knowledgeable enough on this topic to know), as a general matter the book is probably of mostly historical interest at the time. (It's also worth noting that cinematography at that time was still living in an analog world, with films still being made on film -- and in fact, it's admitted here that Lipton's experiments were largely performed with small-format film technology (Super 8 and 16mm), although part of his argument is that the same principles can be applied to 35mm cinematography. Was Hollywood listening?).

Hardcover First Printing. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine dj. Revised Edition. [nice, as-new copy, with no discernible wear to either book or jacket]. (B&W photographs, facsimiles) "Bauhaus! More than seventy years after its founding by the legendary Gropius, the name still has magic. The influence of this small German school on architecture, industrial design, graphic design, and art education has been incalculable." To explore the school's character and influence, the author "went to the Bauhaus people and asked them for their reminiscences, their opinions, their analyses of the Bauhaus experience in the twenties and thirties and the postwar years. This book is a collection of pieces by fifty-three men and women who intimately knew and loved the Bauhaus." Included is a reproduction and translation of the original Bauhaus Manifesto from 1919. This "revised edition" seems to be less common than the original (1970) U.S. printing, although there's no explanation anywhere in the book about the nature of the revisions. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.****.
