Book
Paperback large single poster size sheet which folds into eight octavo pages, very good plus condition, black & white text-photos, minimal edgewear. 8 pp. This pamphlet is part of an exhibition held from 4 October 2018 to 5 May 2019 at the State Library of New South Wales. This pamphlet tells the story of British immigrants made good. The Macpherson family lived in Sydney from 1833. The family photographed their leisured lives, the bush around them, strangers in the street, and the beach. They filmed the world around them before the war changed things forever. In 2014, when the family donated their collection of 688 glass-plate negatives to the library little was known about its contents. Careful cleaning and digitising, meant that the images could be looked at closely in new ways. The expertise of the online community, the detective work of studying places and faces, analysing evidence, putting together fragments of information to reveal identities, locations, times and events meant that the story could start to fall into place.

Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white photos. 276 pp. This memoir recounts the adventures, the triumphs and the tragedies of a lifelong career devoted to books. He worked for 11 years with Hamish Hamilton, one of London's leading literary publishers. He came to Australia in 1961 to run the local operation of the long established company Collins. During 24 years with Collins Australia, he built the company into the largest publisher and distributor in Australia. Among many innovations was a new genre of Australian-focussed children's books. He also recounts his struggle with Murdoch who eventually took over Collins.

Reprint ed. Hardback oblong quarto, pictorial covers, very good condition, colour & black & white & a few sepia (brown-tinted) photos, minimal edgewear. Heavy, and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 275 pp. This fascinating book is about the secret histories of the Macquarie and Dixson Galleries collectors chests. The Macquarie collectors' chest is an enigmatic wooden cabinet filled with painted panels and exotic treasures, created in Australia for Governor Lachlan Macquarie around 1818. It was taken to the United Kingdom, and left forgotten and unnoticed in a Scottish castle until it was rediscovered in the late 1970s. The Mitchell Library of New South Wales acquired the chest, and its remarkable similarity to the Dixson Galleries collectors chest, acquired by the Library in 1937, raised questions about the cabinets creators, owners and purpose. The chest is filled with more than 150 stunning photos and paintings. This beautiful book tells the story of these unusual chests.

Hardback large heavy octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white & colour photos, minor foxing edges, some foxing reverse side jacket (minor edgewear). Heavy (1.5 Kg), and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 539 pp. This book is the journal of Baron Charles von Hugel, who was an Austrian diplomat, army officer and courtier. He was celebrated across Europe, during the mid-19th century for his amazing gardens and his cultivation of exotic plants, including 'New Holland plants'. During several years of travelling the world, he spent most of 1834 in the young Australian colonies of Swan River, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Norfolk Island and New South Wales, looking at the flora and collecting the seeds for his gardens. Translated into English for the first time and edited by Dymphna Clark from a 2000-page manuscript, this special book is an insightful record of the flora he found and the interesting people he met. Hugelâ s botanical influence is still evident also in a number of Australian plant names, such as 'Acacia huegelii' and 'Hardenbergia' (named after his sister Countess von Hardenberg). His observations of Australian plants greatly influenced botanist Ferdinand von Mueller. (Number 17 in the lavish Miegunyah Press series.).
