Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Washington , DC: Senate Historical Office, 1983 292 pages. When the Russians launched Sputnik, Stewart McClure as Chief Clerk of the Committee on Labor, Education and Public Welfare suggested that an education bill currently being considered might stand a better chance of passage if it were packaged as a defense measure. From his memo was born the National Defense Education Act. Having previously served as Administrative Assistant to Senator Guy Gillette (an Iowa Democrat), McClure became Chief of Staff of the Labor Committee in 1955 under the chairmanship of Senator Lister Hill, and again in 1971 under the chairmanship of Senator Harrison Williams. He recounts the avalanche of domestic legislation that the committee handled during the Great Society and offers candid assessments of the internal politics and stresses of committee life during those years. This copy was prsented to a young daughter of friends. There is his cover letter to her and his obituary attached to the front endpapers. Handsomely bound in tan leatherette with gold-stamped titles. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The brown cloth boards are in fine condition. 11 x 9, 286 pages, 64 ounces XX Charles "Chuck" Caldwell served as staff assistant to Texas liberal Democrat Senator Ralph Yarborough throughout the entirety of his 13-year service in Washington. The Historical Office of the US Senate interviewed former members of the Senate staff "to record their reminiscences of people and events in the Senate's recent history." XX [From the web] Ralph Webster Yarborough was an American politician and lawyer who served as a Texas Democratic politician in the United States Senate from 1957 to 1971. He was a leader of the progressive wing of his party and was known for his support of the Civil Rights Acts of 1957, 1960, 1964, and 1968, as well as the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the confirmation of Thurgood Marshall to the U.S. Supreme Court. Yarborough was the only senator from a state that was part of the Confederacy to vote for all five bills. Born on June 8, 1903 in Chandler, Texas, Yarborough practiced law in El Paso after graduating from the University of Texas School of Law. He became an assistant to Texas Attorney General James Burr V Allred in 1931 and specialized in prosecuting major oil companies. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, Yarborough repeatedly ran for governor, opposing the conservative faction of Democrats led by Allan Shivers. He won the special election to serve the remainder of Price Daniel's term after Daniel resigned from the Senate after winning the 1956 gubernatorial election. Yarborough won election to a full term in 1958 and was reelected again in 1964, defeating Harris County Republican Party Chairman George H. W. Bush in the latter race. Yarborough died on January 27, 1996 at the age of 92 in Austin, Texas.
