The Mills of the Kavanaughs, first published in 1951, is a collection of seven dreams, fantasies, and monologues. these two volumes of poems established Robert Lowell as the foremost poet of his generation and placed his work in the ranks of such poetry is Eliot's The Waster Land and Steven's Harmonium. The verse of Robert Lowell was said to be a return to formal and even intricate meters and stanzas. The Mills of the Kavanaughs is a 600 line narrative poem.
