PAPERBACK, fresh attractive copy, very good/. LOTRINGER, SYLVÈRE / VIRILIO, PAUL. The accident of art. Translated by Michael Taormina. New York, NY, Cambridge, Mass.: Semiotexte, Distributed by the MIT Press, 2005, 119pp., . Semiotext(e) foreign agents series. - Urbanist and theorist of technology, Virilio trained as a painter . In Accident of Art, his third extended conversation with Lotringer, Virilio looks back on the century in order to address for the first time the impact of technology on contemporary art. Lotringer and Virilio argue that a direct relation exists between war trauma and art. Why has art failed to reinvent itself in the face of technology, unlike performing art? Why has art simply retreated into painting and surrendered to digital technology? Accidents are inventions in their own right. The can also free us from speed-induced inertia. - CONTENTS: A pitiless art? -- The accident of art -- The Museum of accidents. 9781584350200 ISBN 1584350202.

very good black cloth. SAHLINS, PETER. 1668: the year of the animal in France. New York, Cambridge, Massachusetts ; London, England: Zone Books, Distributed by the MIT Press, 2017, 491pp., . Peter Sahlins's brilliant new book reveals the remarkable and understudied "animal moment" in and around 1668 in which authors (including La Fontaine, whose Fables appeared in that year), anatomists, painters, sculptors, and especially the young Louis XIV turned their attention to nonhuman beings. At the center of the Year of the Animal was the Royal Menagerie in the gardens of Versailles, dominated by exotic and graceful birds. In the unfolding of his original and sophisticated argument, Sahlins shows how the animal bodies of the menagerie and others were critical to a dramatic rethinking of governance, nature, and the human. The animals of 1668 helped to shift an entire worldview in France -- what Sahlins calls Renaissance humanimalism toward more modern expressions of classical naturalism and mechanism. In the wake of 1668 came the debasement of animals and the strengthening of human animality, including in Descartes's animal-machine, highly contested during the Year of the Animal. At the same time, Louis XIV and his intellectual servants used the animals of Versailles to develop and then to transform the symbolic language of French absolutism. Louis XIV came to adopt a model of sovereignty after 1668 in which his absolute authority is represented in manifold ways with the bodies of animals and justified by the bestial nature of his human subjects. 1668 explores and reproduces the king's animal collections -- in printed text, weaving, poetry, and engraving, all seen from a unique interdisciplinary perspective. Two regimes of madness: texts and interviews 1975-1995. Edited by David Lapoujade ; translated by Ames Hodges and Mike Taormina. Los Angeles, CA : Cambridge, Mass.: Semiotexte ; Distributed by MIT Press, 2006, 415pp., . Semiotext(e) foreign agents series. - "The texts and interviews gathered in this volume cover the last twenty years of Gilles Deleuze's life (1975-1995), which saw the publication of his major works: A Thousand Plateaus (1980), Cinema I: Image-Movement (1985), Cinema II: Image-Time (1985), all leading through language, concept and art to What is Philosophy? (1991). They also document Deleuze's increasing involvement with politics (Toni Negri, terrorism, etc.). The texts of Two Regimes of Madness complete those collected in Desert Islands (1953-1974). Both volumes were conceived by the author himself to be his last. Together they provide a prodigious entry into the work of the most important philosopher of our time." - CONTENTS: Two Regimes of Madness 11 (6) Schizophrenia and Society 17 (12) Proust Round Table 29 (32) On the Vincennes Department of Psychoanalysis 61 (2) Note for the Italian Edition of The Logic of Sense 63 (4) The Future of Linguistics 67 (5) Alain Roger's Le Misogyne 72 (7) Four Propositions on Psychoanalysis 79 (10) The Interpretation of Utterances 89 (24) The Rise of the Social 113 (9) Desire and Pleasure 122 (13) The Rich Jew 135 (4) On the New Philosophers (Plus a More General Problem) 139 (9) Europe the Wrong Way 148 (3) Two Questions on Drugs 151 (5) Making Inaudible Forces Audible 156 (5) Spoilers of Peace 161 (3) The Complaint and the Body 164 (2) How Philosophy is Useful to Mathematicians or Musicians 166 (3) Open Letter to Negri's Judges 169 (4) This Book is Literal Proof of Innocence 173 (2) Eight Years Later: 1980 Interview 175 (6) Painting Sets Writing Ablaze 181 (7) Manfred: an Extraordinary Renewal 188 (2) Preface to The Savage Anomaly 190 (4) The Indians of Palestine 194^ (7) Letter to Uno on Language 201 (2) Preface to the American Edition of Nietzsche and Philosophy 203 (7) Cinema-I, Premiere 210 (3) Portrait of the Philosopher as a Moviegoer 213 (9) Pacifism Today 222 (11) May '68 Didn't Happen 233 (4) Letter to Uno: How Felix and I Worked Together 237 (4) Michel Foucault's Main Concepts 241 (20) Zones of Immanence 261 (4) He Was a Group Star 265 (4) Preface to the American Edition of The Movement-Image 269 (3) Foucault and Prison 272 (10) The Brain is the Screen 282 (10) Occupy Without Counting: Boulez,^ Proust and Time 292 (8) Preface to the American Edition of Difference and Repetition 300 (4) Preface to the American Edition of Dialogues 304 (4) Preface to the Italian Edition of a Thousand Plateaus 308 (4) What is the Creative Act? 312 (13) What Voice Brings to the Text 325 (2) Correspondence with Dionys Mascolo 327 (1) Stones 327 (6) Postscript to the American Edition: A Return to Bergson 333 (5) What is a Dispositif? 338 (11) Response to a Question on the Subject 349 (3) Preface to the American Edition of The Time-Image 352 (3) Rivette's Three Circles 355 (4) A Slippery Slope 359 (2) Letter-Preface to Jean-Clet Martin 361 (3) Preface to the American Edition of Empiricism and Subjectivity 364 (2) Preface: A New Stylistics 366 (6) Preface: The Speeds of Time 372 (3) The Gulf War: a Despicable War 375 (2) We Invented the Ritornello 377 (5) For Felix 382 (2) Immanence: a Life 384 (7) Notes 391 (10) Sources 401 (10) Index 411. 9781584350323 ISBN 1584350326.

sewn PAPERBACK, very good. remainder stamp on bottom foredge. VANEIGEM, RAOUL. The Movement of the Free Spirit: general considerations and firsthand testimony concerning some brief flowerings of life in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and, incidentally, our own time. Translated by Randall Cherry and Ian Patterson. New York : Cambridge, Mass.: Zone Books ; Distributed by the MIT Press, 1998, First Paperback edition, 302pp., . Rear cover text: This book by the legendary Situationist activist and author of The Revolution of Everyday Life examines the heretical and millenarian movements that challenged social and ecclesiastical authority in Europe from the 1200s into the 1500s. Although Vaneigem discusses a number of different movements such as the Cathars and Joachimite millenarians, his main emphasis is on the various manifestations of the Movement of the Free Spirit in northern Europe. He sees not only resistance to the power of state and church but also the immensely creative invention of new forms of love, sexuality, community, and exchange. Vaneigem is particularly interested in the radical opposition presented by these movements to the imperatives of an emerging market-based economy, and he evokes crucial historical parallels with the antisystemic rebellions of the 1960s. The book includes translations of original texts and source materials. 9780942299717 ISBN 094229971X.
