Ortiz was born in 1938 to a Scots-Irish father, and a mother that she claimed was part Native American. This claim to Native American heritage has been called into question, and over the years, she has been identified as being Cheyenne, Cherokee, or not indigenous at all. Her paternal grandfather was a Wobbly and Socialist Party member. Ortiz founded the feminist organization Cell 16, and became active in the American Indian Movement. Her most famous work is the 2014 Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States.
