From the Inside Flap:
United States conquest of Spanish colonies in the second half of the nineteenth century is not a subject that has produced extensive historical analysis. The military seizure and colonization of half of the territory of the Republic of Mexico has elicited little interest and is often glossed over as part of the natural expansion of the United States. However, the indigenous peoples of the region have not forgotten that they were conquered and that they have human and legal rights despite the fact that they are now minorities in the area seized. Roots of Resistance: Land Tenure in New Mexico, 1680-1980 provides a better understanding of the history of Mexican and Indian peoples in the Southwest and reveals the dynamic nature of New Mexican cultural survival.

Book Description Paperback. vi, 202pg. paperback, 6 x 9 inches. Pen marking on cover, corners bumped, else very good. Ortiz was born in 1938 to a Scots-Irish father, and a mother that she claimed was part Native American. This claim to Native American heritage has been called into question, and over the years, she has been identified as being Cheyenne, Cherokee, or not indigenous at all. Her paternal grandfather was a Wobbly and Socialist Party member. Ortiz founded the feminist organization Cell 16, and became active in the American Indian Movement. Her most famous work is the 2014 Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States. Seller Inventory # 277743
