Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Officers' Row is a work of historical fiction, based on a true story, that captures a bygone era in San Diego at the turn of the century. The book chronicles the tragic explosion of the USS Bennington that took the lives of 65 men. The explosion took place on July 21, 1905 in San Diego Bay and is one of the most terrible peacetime military disasters of all time. Politics, romance, and tragedy unfold as high society embraces the local military and the two worlds unite. Based on research by the author while living in those historic quarters. Written by Navy wife and historian Mary Ellen Cortellini who, a century later, found herself sitting on the front porch of her new home at Officers' Row looking out across San Diego Bay. It's a smart-looking, quick-read that brings to life many forgotten pieces of the past, while adding personalities and personal interaction based on written accounts of the time. The author turns her attention to late-Victorian detail, both in her characters and of the era, provide a lovely backdrop to the story. 104 color/sepia photos, paintings, drawings, illustrations. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs.

Paperback. First Impression. Demy folio, [27.75cm/11inches], paperbound with pictorial covers, pp. 116. Fully illustrated with colour plates, sepia halftones &tc. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Mary Ellen Cortellini lived in the Officer's Quarters at Fort Rosecrans, now Naval Submarine Base Point Loma. She noted in her biography for the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission" "We lived in the beautiful, one-hundred-year old Armybuilt quarters overlooking the Pacific Ocean and entrance to San Diego Bay. Over the years, I have done extensive historical research about the homes and the early build-up of the coastal defense installation. By piecing together all of the materials and photos, I have brought the first occupants of "Officers' Row" back-to-life and uncovered a bygone era of Army glory in San Diego at the turn of the twentieth century. And yet, there was also a contemporary twist The amazing discovery of the modern-day Fort Rosecrans Soldiers, tucked away in the old post bakery building a century later, and hidden in the midst of an active Navy base. They were the brave, young members of the Army's 710th Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal). We became friends during the course of my work and they touched my heart and soul forever. In the course of my research, I learned that Constructing Quartermaster Colonel Rolfe, Post Commander Captain Scott, and Post Surgeon Major Kneedler, stationed at Fort Rosecrans between 1902-1905, have all been forgotten over time. One hundred years have passed, and I feared that the three young Soldiers from the 710th who were killed in Afghanistan in 2002 would suffer the same fate in history. Maybe it was destiny that our paths would cross and produce the unlikely alliance and unique friendship between a Navy Captain's wife and Army EOD Soldiers during the war on terror. It has been an incredible journey. What started out as a personal curiosity about my magnificent military quarters, lead me on a historical adventure all the way to the caves of Tora Bora and back. I now believe that I was put in that house for a very special reason; to tell the story of Fort Rosecrans Soldiers, past and present. My series of books is collectively called The Forgotten Soldiers of Fort Rosecrans. They are stories about the power of love and friendship, and the triumph of the human spirit, during a time of war. In exceptionally good condition.

The cover blurb reads: ''Starting with the author's family's arrival in America in 1640, this takes us through the roaring Twenties, to the Great Depression ,where they lived in appalling poverty, to World War II, where Ted took part in the rescue of (future) President Kennedy. This book is living history of the long journey of a nobody who became a somebody the American way.'' The primary focus of the book is on the war experiences (about half the book is devoted to that period). In August 1943 Robinson was radar officer on the lead ship on a patrol. He spotted a destroyer and warned other boats, including PT-109, but the warning was not in time, and the boat was rammed and caught on fire. JFK was burned and injured but helped rescue his crew.
