Book
Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Brief Gift Inscription by Previous Owner; A chip and some edgewear to dustjacket. In Chief Joseph Country: Land of the Nez Perce, author Bill Gulick lets the participants in the developing drama tell the story in their own words by excerpting diaries, letters, and statements made in contemporary accounts. Beginning with the prehistory of the Nez Perces, he relates how, after being pedestrians for eight thousand years, acquisition of the horse drastically altered their way of life. Then, in rapid succession, came firearms, American explorers, British fur traders, the Manifest Destiny struggle, missionaries, Oregon Trail emigrants, settlers, gold miners, farmers, and finally war. In selecting the many historical photographs and sketches used to illustrate the book, the author examined the holdings of some twenty institutions from coast to coast, some of which dated back to the 1850s. As he did in Snake River Country, Bill Gulick applies skills learned as a novelist and dramatist to the non-fiction field of history, using the twin tools of dramatic narrative and sound research to bring history alive to the layman reader.

Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition, 4to with 316 pgs. Signed by author to Charles H. Older and wife on title page, "For Kitty + Chuck with best regards - Bill Gulick". Also has presentation note (not from Gulick) on half-title. Book is in Very Good condition with slight bumping/rubbing to cover edges. Interior is clean and tight. Dust jacket is in Good condition with slight bumping to edges and a 1/2" tear to back. Red cloth cover; orange/white dj with black text. Charles "Chuck" Herman Older was born on Sept. 29, 1917, in Hanford, Calif. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he majored in political science. He became a pilot in the Marine Corps Reserve, but resigned his commission as a second lieutenant to join the Flying Tigers, a covert group of American pilots recruited by Col. Claire Chennault to help the Chinese fight the Japanese in China and Burma. Mr. Older was assigned to the Tigers' 3rd Pursuit Squadron, known as Hell's Angels. He was credited with downing 10¼ enemy planes, making him a double ace and the third highest scoring Flying Tiger. He then joined the Army Air Forces and shot down eight more enemy planes. He also led the first strike on Japanese forces in Shanghai, in which United States planes destroyed 72 Japanese aircraft with no American losses. After the war, Mr. Older earned a law degree from the University of Southern California and practiced law until Gov. Ronald Reagan named him to Los Angeles Superior Court in 1967. Judge Older then became the ringmaster of a 22-week trial that began on July 24, 1970, that seized the attention of the world with the trial of Charles Manson and his followers. All defendants were sentenced to death but their sentences were commuted when the death penalty was ruled unconstitutional in California in 1972.
