First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good +. (First edition). Quarto, xx, 246pp., illustrated with 24 hand-colored aquatints. In period (or perhaps a little later) 3/4 brown polished calf and marbled boards with red-orange endpapers. Some dampstaining to front board, with chips and nicks to the extremities of the boards. Possible water damage to part of the spine, and the front outer joint is partially cracked, though the board is holding strong. One plate (opposite page 67, depicting the Pagoda), was poorly trimmed by the printer, with the bottom part of the plate title cut off, and the plate appearing slightly canted on the leaf (the illustration itself is entirely present). Some scattered foxing to a few leaves, but generally an unfoxed example, with only some mild, normal age-toning to the single leaves opposite a few of the plates). Some dampstaining to parts of the text and some of the plates, most obviously in about the last sixth of the book. This could be significantly improved by a professional conservator, if desired. There is no half-title (we are unsure if this is as issued or not). Overall, an unsophisticated and unrestored complete copy of this notable travel account, overall a good or better copy. First Edition
First edition of this attractive, informative and well-illustrated travelogue. In 1811, Wathen (1751-1828), a glover from Hereford, occupied his retirement with numerous expeditions mostly within the British Isles, and many written up for the Gentleman's Magazine, to which he was a frequent contributor. In 1811 he sailed to India and China with Captain James Pendergrass, an old school friend, the voyage resulting in the present work which, published to generally favourable reviews, includes seven views of India, six of Indonesia, nine of China, and two of St. Helena. "The author displays in every thing a picturesque turn of fancy, and is attracted on all occasions by the visible imagery which surrounds him. Both by his descriptions and his sketches, he has added to our knowledge of Madras and its neighbourhood, of Pulo-penang, and of Canton; and he will be followed by the reader and the gazer with much gratification and little fatigue" (The Monthly Review, vol. 77, 1815, p.278). An pencilled note in the margin at p.81 reveals an intriguing incident. One evening while being entertained by Mr. Griffiths "a very opulent merchant, the only surviving partner of the House of Hope and Company", they were "honoured with the company of two distinguished Indian chiefs for about an hour in the evening". They arrived in "eight elegant palanquins. proceeded and followed by numerous retinue with lighted flambeaux. the guests were said to be an uncle and his nephew. The elder spoke a little English. the dresses and turbans of these visitors were splendidly ornamented with gold and jewels. They drank some wine, and stayed about an hour. we were informed that they were relations of the present Nabob of Arcot". The marginal note reads "Ed. Griffiths of Newcourt & his brother were these Indian chiefs. Auctore E.G. ipso. 1864". Abbey Travel II 517; Cordier, p.2107, misdated to 1824; Lust 386; Mendelssohn II, p.591. Tall quarto (266 x 215 mm). Contemporary streaked calf, rebacked in sheep, black morocco label, lozenges in blind to the compartments, panel in gilt to the boards, marbled edges and endpapers, the endpapers later. 24 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Clark after the author's own sketches. A little rubbed, particularly at the board edges, some offsetting from and to the plates and text-block lightly browned as usual, remains a very good copy.
London 1814, Nichols. 3/4 New leather spine over marbled boards, 241p., + list of plates, 24 hand colored beautiful aquatints from drawings by the author, very good copy, as issued 22 x 26.5 cm, an exceptionally R A R E B O O K ! A beautiful commentary on what was seen, their adventures, botany, food found, cultures observed and human nature aboard the ship. * THE PALTES With following plates: New custom-house and buildings near the Black Town, Madras; Fort St. George; Bramin's tomb; Great Pagoda at Conjeveram; View from the summit of the great Pagoda; Second view from the Pagoda; Chingleput & Scenery; View of jetty George Town Pulo Penang; View ascending the hill Penang; Treloa House George Town; House & Mill of Mr. Amee Chinese miller; Ancient Gateway Malacca; Franciscan Monastery at Macao; Church of St. Lazarus Macao; Camoens' Cave; View from Camoen's Garden Macao; Anson's Bay Bocca Tigris; Tigris to second bar Pagoda; River to Bocca Tigris; View Banquetting-room at Mr. Pon-que- qua's house; Part of the India Company's Factories and China street Canton; Col.
