Der Traum der Roten Kammer ist einer der berühmtesten klassischen Romane der chinesischen Literatur aus dem Kaiserreich China. Er gehört zu den vier klassischen Romanen Chinas. Vor allem in Manuskript-Abschriften des 18. Jahrhunderts wird er auch "Die Geschichte des Steins/vom Stein" oder "Aufzeichnungen auf einem Stein" genannt. Der Roman erzählt den Niedergang der in Peking lebenden Familie Jia. Obwohl der Autor die Ereignisse in die Ming-Zeit zurückdatiert hat, um der Zensur zu entgehen, beschreibt der Roman sehr detailliert die Gesellschaft und sozialen Verhältnisse unter der Herrschaft des Kaisers Qianlong. Der Traum der Roten Kammer gilt als gelungenste Darstellung Chinas zur Zeit der Qing-Dynastie. Die wichtigen chinesischen Philosophie-Strömungen des Daoismus, Konfuzianismus und Buddhismus lassen sich im Werk nachweisen. "Wenn man gebildeten, jugendlichen Chinesen beiderlei Geschlechts gegenüber den Namen Hongloumeng nennt, dann werden ihre Augen leuchten, und sie werden erkennen, dass sie den Roman nicht nur einmal, sondern drei- oder viermal durchgelesen haben und stellenweise auswendig kennen. Die erstaunliche Beliebtheit des Hongloumeng gerade bei der chinesischen Jugend erklärt sich wohl daraus, dass der Roman sich in sehr eindringlicher ernsthafter Weise mit nahezu allen Problemen befasst, die gerade junge Chinesen beiderlei Geschlechts unmittelbar bewegen. Es ist zu beachten, dass das Alter der Hauptpersonen sich zwischen zwölf und neunzehn Jahren bewegt! Der Roman ist eine Art Lebensbrevier der chinesischen Jugend."( Franz Kuhn: Nachwort der deutschen Übersetzung) Cao Xueqin (* zwischen 1715 und 1724; gestorben 1763(?)) war ein chinesischer Schriftsteller und Autor des chinesischen Romans Der Traum der roten Kammer. Cao stammte aus einer han-chinesischen Familie, die in das mandschurische Bannersystem integriert worden war. Über Cao Xueqins eigenes Leben ist vergleichsweise wenig bekannt. Den größten Teil verbrachte er in großer Armut im Westen von Peking, wo er sich mit dem Verkauf eigener Bilder über Wasser hielt. Daneben arbeitete er zeitweise als Lehrer an einer kaiserlichen Schule für die Kinder mandschurischer Adeliger und Bannerleute. Cao ist durch ein einziges Werk bekannt geworden, das allerdings Eingang in die Weltliteratur gefunden hat: den Roman Der Traum der roten Kammer. Nach Aussagen von Freunden hat er über zehn Jahre daran geschrieben, vermutlich in der Zeit kurz vor der Jahrhundertmitte. Bei Caos Tod 1763 waren lediglich 80 der geplanten 100 Kapitel geschrieben.
