Clarke, Limited, Edinburgh. 509 pages. Insured post. The Romance of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table hails from Malory's classic text, Morte D'Arthur; neatly told here by Alfred W. Pollard. Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory compiled mythical tales of the legendary King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and the Knights. First published in 1485 and now one of the best-known works of Arthurian literature; masterfully edited by Alfred Pollard (1859 - 1944). In his own words, he "tried to clear away some of the underwoods that the great trees may be better seen, and though I know that I have cleared away some small timber that is fine stuff in itself, if the great trees stand out the better, the experiment may be forgiven." This edition contains a series of dazzling color plates and b&w illustrations - by a master of the craft; Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (from 1850 until the First World War), Rackham's artistry is simply unparalleled. Rackham developed a unique style, combining haunting humor with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further elucidate the wonderful ballads of yesteryear. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.

Prior collector also associates Gaillard Johnson with the Astors as family friends. The Astors were the or near the wealthiest American family in the ninetheenth century from the fur trade, railroad and ship construction, opium trade, real estate, etc. John Jacob Astor VI, or young "Jakey," was known as the Titanic baby as his father, the Colonel JJA IV (who opposed the institution of the Federal Reserve central bank in America), perished on the mythic unsinkable. John Pierpont Morgan infamously missed scheduled boarding in England. JJA VI's mother, Madeleine Astor, survived while five months pregnant with him and is portrayed in the 1997 film. Men and most onboard may have also been rescued, but for an insufficient number of life boats, etc. Publisher's morocco boards in white, gilt embossed cover and spine titles, moderate shelf, spine wear ripple, rub, nicking, small area of scrape.
