Contributions by the best-known modern poets include Patrick Kavanagh, Henry Miller, Alan Ross, Stevie Smith and RS Thomas. Includes a facsimile reproduction of Augustus John's poem "The Antiquary", three lithographs of TS Eliot's "Rhapsody on a Windy Night" by Gerald Wilde and eight drawings for "The Ancient Mariner" by Mervyn Peake. Introduction of 11 pages by the editor written in memory of Keith Douglas who was killed in action in 1944 including a black and white photographic illustration of him. Blue boards with gilt titles to spine; head and foot badly stained and foxed where the dust jacket has been trimmed. Endpapers grubby and foxed; small section of fep excised. Light foxing to external page-edges. Otherwise internally in very good condition. Dust jacket with its front pictorial cover by Gerald Wilde has been cut to the upper and lower section resulting in a small loss and which explains the discolouring of the exposed part of the boards. Remnants only of rear cover of dust jacket and spine has two sections missing also. Underside of dust jacket has been protected by a sheet of brown paper and the upper side has been protected by a cellophane cover held in place by a strip of red tape.

The boards have a bump to the top right corner of the front panel, a little rubbing at the top and bottom of the spine and a light dent to the bottom edge of the rear panel. Browning to the page edges. Previous owner's name in pencil to the front free endpaper where there are also some light notes in pencil. Slight tearing to the bottom edge of the rear free endpaper. There is some browning to the pages which are otherwise unmarked. The jacket has a little staining to the front panel. The spine is darkened with a little chipping at the top and bottom. There is a two inch closed tear to the bottom right corner of the front panel and there are small tears at the corners of the front and rear panels and seven lines of verse written in pencil on the reverse. First printing.
