Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is "Religious Pamphlets, Selected and Arranged by Percy Dearmer. Published in 1898 by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co. in the "Pamphlet Library" , which, was edited by Arthur Waugh. This is the First Edition. The book has an Introduction and notes. The following is excerpted from the "Prefatory Note to the Pamphlet Library" by Mr. Waugh : "The object is to set before readers who are interested in the literary and constitutional history of our country [England] the text of those pamphlets or tractates which, besides possessing the only saving qualities of distinction and style, have also exercised a striking influence upon the current of events. At present five volumes are in contemplation, dealing respectively with pamphlets of political, literary, Religious, and dramatic significance, and the editors have regulated their choices primarily by two considerations. Each pamphlet, it has been held, should have high literary qualities, and should also mark a distinct change or development of taste or standpoint. Reform is the child of Controversy, and the most effectual arrows in the quiver of Controversy are those of a country's Press. Before the day of the clamoring newspaper, the Pamphlet was the leader of popular taste, so that in a study of these fugitive pieces we may see the features of an Age, as in a glass, may mark its expression, and understand its tendency" *********************************************** CONTENTS : Introduction [Well worth the read!] / I. Two Volume Set. Octavo, black cloth (hardcover), xxv + 454 pp; [vi] + 455-948 pp. Very Good, with former-owner inscriptions in each volume and light underlining in pencil to the first chapter of Volume I. From dust jacket: William Dean Howells once commented on the suggestion that his letters from Mark Twain be published, "I think so too; they are wonderful; and if mine were printed with them, perhaps it would not hurt." This first comprehensive collection of a correspondence between two brilliant stylists reflects the development of this American literary friendship of nearly unparalleled duration and significance. The letters augment and in some ways revise existing biographical estimates of thse two colorful personalities. The majority have never been published; and of the remainder, many appear for the first time in full, unbowdlerized transcription. The publishing practices and critical attitudes of the period are variously documented here, in particular, the formation during the Gilded Age of a characteristic vernacular tradition in American writing. Howells, as editor and critic, was architect of this tradition; but it was Mark Twain who made the common speech into an instrument of narrative prose having lyric and epic as well as comic potentialities. Full annotations make the collection an independent and integrated totality. American Biography, Author Biography, Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain, Letters, Publishing, Books about Books. KHS.
