Franz Tunda, nato nel 1894 a Vienna, tenente dell'Imperial regio Esercito austro-ungarico nella grande guerra, è stato fatto prigioniero dai russi, nell'agosto del 1916, grazie alla complicità di alcuni trafficanti locali, riesce a fuggire e a rifugiarsi in Siberia, nella taiga di Baranowicz Verkhne-Udinskdove, dove passa un lungo periodo, fino alla primavera del '19, in uno sperduto casolare, vivendo la vita dei boschi, in compagnia di un cacciatore taciturno. Quando scopre che la guerra è finita, parte, vorrebbe tornare a Vienna a cercare la sua promessa sposa: la signorina Irene Hartmann. Nel lungo viaggio attraverso la Russia, in piena guerra civile rivoluzionaria, si trova coinvolto negli scontri tra comunisti e Armata Bianca. Si innamora della compagna Natasha Alexandrovna, che affianca nella lotta e nell'amore. Quando però, giunto a Mosca, si sente costretto dal partito comunista, a prendere la tessera e a svolgere funzioni di rappresentanza, nonostante si sia nel frattempo sposato con Alya a Baku, decide nuovamente di fuggire e torna a Vienna.
