No Binding. Condition: Good. Original folding brochure printed on white paper. Color illustration on front panel features a woman hiking in a mountainous landscape with a green, yellow, and white color palette. No date, circa 1930s. 4" x 8 1/2" folded. Folds open into a 24" x 17" sheet. Brochure is clean and intact overall but there are a few chips in lower-left corner of map (mostly limited to margins), a large split measuring about 8 1/2" from left edge of map, small splits at edges, a few small stains, and some dampstaining and darkening (most visible on back panel when brochure is folded). A Good copy. Fascinating brochure about hiking opportunities in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles. One side of the opened brochure is entirely a trail and city map (political map style) printed in green ink with highlighted features printed in orange ink. This map features trails in the San Gabriel Mountains, some of which can be accessed by Pacific Electric Railway Lines. About two-thirds of the map (from top to bottom) shows the San Gabriel Mountains and Santa Barbara National Forest. The lower third of the map shows Southern California cities such as Burbank, Colegrove, Glendale, Pasadena, Los Angeles, Arcadia, San Gabriel, El Monte, Covina, San Dimas, Claremont, Pomona, and Cucamonga. There is a legend in the upper-left corner which has the following identifiable features: "point from which view is obtained," "ranch where milk, butter, eggs, etc., can be obtained," "supplies obtainable," "post office," "area containing particularly attractive camping sites," "trails," "guides, packers, etc., obtainable," "meals and lodging," "waterfall," "pack and saddle stock obtainable," "good fishing stream or lake," "telephone," "Forest Service fire lookout station," "Forest Ranger station--information obtainable," "Forest Service fire tool cache," "Pacific Electric Railway Lines," "Index to trail description" [numbers that correspond to descriptions on rest of brochure]. These numbers represent groups of trails organized by their proximity to specific cities or points of interest. The following are the numbers with their corresponding city or point or interest from where hikers can access nearby trails: 1) San Fernando, 2) Pasadena, 3) Mt. Lowe, 4) Sierra Madre, 5) Monrovia, 6) Los Lomas, 7) Azusa, 8) Glendora, 9) San Dimas, and 10) Upland. The back panel features a "Notice to Campers" which lists safety rules for campers and hikers. The Pacific Electric Company (PE) was founded in 1901 by railroad executive Henry E. Huntington and banker Isaias W. Hellman. PE soon created a vast network of interurban electric railways throughout the Los Angeles region. Huntington's vision of sprawling electric railways was highly dependent upon real estate development, so a decline in PE's income began to emerge in the 1920s when real estate development slowed. The demise of PE came in the 1950s with the advent of freeway construction in Los Angeles and what was known as the Great American Streetcar Scandal. The last PE railway line to operate was the one between Los Angeles and Long Beach which closed in 1961. PE officially merged into the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) in 1965. However, as urban development progressed, so did the local traffic congestion. The 1970s and 1980s marked a period when the concept of electric passenger railways was revisited as a viable option of mass transit and easing traffic congestion. Interurban electric rail passenger trains saw a return in 1990 with the opening of the Metro Blue Line which ran between downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach and used much of PE's original roadbed. To this day, there are new light rail lines being built in the Los Angeles region.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
Condition: Good. Railway pass. Single card, 2.5 x 4". Typewritten to various Union Pacific System employees. Valid 1923. W/ stamped signature of VP & GM D. Pontius. Signed in ink on verso by holder. Rare.
Condition: Very Good. This map of southern California covers a broad territory between San Fernando and San Bernardino and includes Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and much of Orange County. The railroad lines of the Pacific Electric and the Southern Pacific, plus those jointly operated, are shown according to the legend below the title. Though it formerly comprised one of the largest electrified inter-urban passenger networks in the United States, the Pacific Electric Railway had shifted almost entirely to freight operations by the time of publication. According to a note in the lower right margin, the colors reflect the territories of various district freight agents as of June, 1962; each listed respectively within their territory. Printed in August of 1956. Sheet Width (in) 34.75 Sheet Height (in) 22.25 Condition Description "Formerly folded into 20 segments, with creasing and light wear along former fold lines. Former 'front' panels are toned with age, along with a 3" strip on the left side confined to the margin. Several small holes and tears in the upper left corner, away from the image. Contains contemporary manuscript updates to 1962, according to notes in the lower right margin.".
Condition: Very Good. Created by a member of the gigantic and influential Southern Pacific Railroad in 1901, the Pacific Electric Railway company operated the largest electric railway system in the world by the early 1920's. Aggressive pursuit by the company's officers led to significant consolidation among private companies and generous land concessions by local politicians for new tracks. This led to a complex network of rail and bus routes owned by a private company connected Orange, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. This map shows the extent of that interconnected system and includes an inset map of downtown Los Angeles and Union Station. Profits boomed through the 1920's, but by the time this map was published, the service was in a decline. Although traffic increased due to war manufacturing, real estate income from the land grants had largely dried up by the 40's, and the construction of the area's highway system pushed many potential riders to automobile transportation. By 1961, the last assets of the Pacific Electric were sold to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority. Sheet Width (in) 21.9 Sheet Height (in) 17 Condition Description The map is intact, but has several condition issues. The front panel is toned and discolored from age, while similar discoloration is also evident along fold lines and in the margins. Several fold intersections are worn and result in minor image loss, but have been repaired on verso to halt further deterioration. Several tape repairs are present within the margins. Despite the issues, the map remains in fair condition, and is an important article from California's transportation history.
