On his personal letterhead, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian (born 1944) discusses invitations for some cryptic event, closing with a reference to the just-published "Lincoln Image": "My new Lincoln book just arrived -- the first copy off the presses. It looks very nice." Signed simply "Steve" in blue ballpoint.

On "Lincoln National Life Foundation" letterhead citing Neely as director, he thanks Gates for some Lincoln material. Signed simply "Mark" in blue ink. A superb first of this acclaimed title with a vintage letter from each author.
