Part of a project in which the Vatican Museums commissioned nine international photographers to produce true photographic artworks, representing and narrating the Museums themselves, and which have in effect formed a new body of work as part of the Vatican Collection of Contemporary Art. For the first time, the works, the interior and exterior spaces, but also the tourists who pass through them, are used as subjects of works of art and celebrated from unprecedented and multiple viewpoints. The volume offers a series of essays dealing with different themes, including the importance of photography in museums and in contemporary art, the concept of art within art, the dialogue between art and the Church and between contemporary artists and historical collections, as well as the genesis of this new photographic collection acquired by the Vatican Museums. The essays are followed by a focus on the nine visual itineraries, explaining the aesthetic and stylistic characteristics of each one and introducing the images. These include the series by Mimmo Jodice, who photographed faces of Roman sculpture, Alain Fleischer with his swirling perspectives, the unusual itinerary of Rinko Kawauchi which immortalizes all that is not the object of a visit, in a surprising diversity of scenarios. The biographies of the photographers conclude the volume.
