Setting the birth of a new collection is indeed one of the best ways for a museum to demonstrate its vitality. An ambitious enterprise especially for the “Museum of Museums”, namely the Museums of the Pope, which over the centuries of their history have repeatedly been faced with expansions and additions of new collections.

A Matter of Light is a project aimed to create the first collection of contemporary photography in the Vatican Museums. A need turned into an opportunity for experimentation: to transform a historical, social, multicultural, “ritual” or fully symbolic place such as the Vatican Museums, into the object of the creative and interpretative work by nine international photographers, diverse from the perspectives of research, education, style and origin.

Bill Armstrong, Peter Bialobrzeski, Antonio Biasiucci, Alain Fleischer, Francesco Jodice, Mimmo Jodice, Rinko Kawauchi, Martin Parr, Massimo Siragusa joined the project creating unprecedented series for the Vatican Museums. For the fi rst time a museum has realized such an ensemble: a sort of reportage commissioned to a group of “voices” of the international photographic art scene. It opens the doors of the Vatican Museums to the world and shows them in their prestigious and precious, classical and contemporary uniqueness.

Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Documents the creation of a unique collection of contemporary photography for the Vatican Museums.A Matter of Light brings together the eyes of nine masters of international photography called to interpret the prestigious and precious uniqueness of the Vatican Museums. It derives from the intention to constitute the first photographic collection within the Contemporary Art Collection of the Vatican Museums. It is the first time that a Museum has commissioned a production of this type, aimed at constituting a new photographic collection inseparably linked to the museum itself, which becomes both its subject and its recipient. The photographers chosen to work within the Vatican Museums are Bill Armstrong, Peter Bialobrzeski, Antonio Biasiucci, Alain Fleischer, Francesco Jodice, Mimmo Jodice, Rinko Kawauchi, Martin Parr and Massimo Siragusa. Each one of them has worked in distinct moments and on different aspects of this multiple museum, producing nine autonomous works that document and interpret the interior and architectural space of the halls, the flow of visitors and the memories that daily animate the people and spaces, the works on display and those conserved in the deposits, signs of wear and tear, and bodily traces. The Vatican Museums come to vivid life in this collection featuring work by Bill Armstrong, Peter Bialobrzeski, Antonio Biasiucci, Alain Fleischer, Francesco Jodice, and others. Book Description Soft cover. Condition: New. Number of pages: 196 Dimensions: 22 x 24 x 2 cm Illustrations: 178 in colour and b/w. Part of a project in which the Vatican Museums commissioned nine international photographers to produce true photographic artworks, representing and narrating the Museums themselves, and which have in effect formed a new body of work as part of the Vatican Collection of Contemporary Art. For the first time, the works, the interior and exterior spaces, but also the tourists who pass through them, are used as subjects of works of art and celebrated from unprecedented and multiple viewpoints. The volume offers a series of essays dealing with different themes, including the importance of photography in museums and in contemporary art, the concept of art within art, the dialogue between art and the Church and between contemporary artists and historical collections, as well as the genesis of this new photographic collection acquired by the Vatican Museums. The essays are followed by a focus on the nine visual itineraries, explaining the aesthetic and stylistic characteristics of each one and introducing the images. These include the series by Mimmo Jodice, who photographed faces of Roman sculpture, Alain Fleischer with his swirling perspectives, the unusual itinerary of Rinko Kawauchi which immortalizes all that is not the object of a visit, in a surprising diversity of scenarios. The biographies of the photographers conclude the volume. Seller Inventory # PGVAT106
