Hardcover. First Edition; First Printing. Very good with owner's short 4-line gift inscription on front free endpaper, moderate general wear, a very light line of staining to the top edges prelims and rear endpapers, in the very scarce dust jacket. The jacket is in several pieces, all holding together inside the mylar jacket protector; they are not taped or glued. A light water-stain shows in a 1 - 2" band around the entire top edge of the jacket. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 187 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition; Mixed Printings. 4to 11" - 13" tall; 376 pages; SIGNED] 1926 Viking Press. Two volumes, complete, of Johnson's important anthology of African American religious and folk songs in the spiritual tradition. 187; 189 pp. The first volume in the 4th printing and the second volume in the 1st printing. Each volume signed by both James Weldon Johnson and his brother, J. Rosmaond - who arranged the song's musical notation. Snugly bound and very neat in brown and blue cloth respectively, with a matching design of lettering in dark brown and in size. Mild crimping to cloth at spine ends and expected mild toning to page stock. Generally quite bright and neat. The first volume signed without inscription by both authors; offset shadow toning to the endpages where a pair of period reviews had been laid in. Reviews preserved in an archival envelope. A clipped obituary of James Weldon Johnson is mounted on the signature page without obscuring any detail of the signatures. The second volume is inscribed by J Rosamond to Dr William A Wolf and signed without address by James Weldon Johnson. In each case the brothers signed with a different pen. Provenance of William A Wolf of Lancaster, PA - a prolific composer of hymns and classical pieces, who was the proprietor of the most well regarded school for musicians in early 20th century Lancaster, PA. Wolf assembled an extensive and wide ranging library of books on the subjects of music in almost every respect, and by all appearances he treasured these books among the best of his library. Sadly, he appears to have detested dust jackets, so that among the thousands of well preserved volumes nary a one can be found with an original jacket. Still a very well cared for example of the complete work, signed and VG+ ; Signed by Author.
