Published by The Dial Press, New York, 1971. Book Club edition, Red boards, leather spine with gilt titles, genealogy tables on endpapers. Over 100 illustrations, many in full color. Volume is in fine condition without marks, tears or folds. Bookplate on front pastedown. Unclipped dust jacket has light edge wear and scuffing; yellowing on inside. Originally composed as a stage anthology of prose, verse, and music by and about the kings and queens of England, ranging from the Normans to Queen Victoria. "Its dramatic effect was gained not through lavish stage props and scenery or by a complex production, but by offering a mixture of comedy, tragedy, farce and chronicle which ideally suited the talents of such distinguished actors and actresses as Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Vanessa Redgrave, Ian Richardson. The present book is an elaboration of this basic theme with a rich collection of new material to add to the original." According to Ian Richardson "every member of the Royal Shakespeare Company - present, past, or passed-on - has participated in it at one time or another".

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Compiled by John Barton and Joy Law, The Hollow Crown is an account of the English monarchy based on a production by John Barton, a noted director of Shakespearean productions at both Stratford and Aldwych, for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Including various historical works of prose and verse both written by and about the English monarch, the text is accompanied by images of them gathered together by Joy Law, the Publications and Exhibitions Officer at the royal College of Art. Many of the images included have rarely been published, and amongst them are included a wide variety of styles, from portraits to cartoons. The book was further designed by J.M. Gibson, a graduate of the Royal College of Art, and "sets a new standard for the integration of text and illustrations." This volume is in good condition with a dust jacket also in good condition. There is some tearing and creasing to the dust jacket, both at the top edges, and particularly at the lower edge of the spine. Internally, there are no obvious issues inside the book. This unique presentation of historical literature and images presents the history of the English royal family from the time of the Normans to Queen Victoria in an engaging and informative way.
