"She was born on October 21, 1925, in Evanston, Illinois and was a wild, adventurous, free spirit, who was an eclectic reader and artist. She was raised in Chicago and went to Francis W. Parker School where she met her best friend Edward Gorey. She attended Mills College and then attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, again with Edward Gorey. During WWII, she worked as a civilian for the US armed forces in France. She had showings of her paintings in Nice and Cagnes-Sur-Mer, and later in Chicago and New York. After the war, she went to Guatemala where she had an ocelot as a pet. The ocelot would drape itself around her neck to go for "walks" with Connie. " (from the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home website).

Condition: Fine. "This impactful map of the famous island just south of Cape Cod was designed in a style reminiscent of much older cartographic material. Profiles of sailing ships, "hatched" oceans, a decorative compass rose and a pseudo "cartes-a-figures" border all add classical map elements to this view celebrating the rich history of Martha's Vineyard. Text taken from Gosnold's account of landing on the island surrounds the map, providing concrete testimony in addition to the visual persuasion. The image was drawn by Consuelo Joerns, an illustrator and fine artist who creates children's books in addition to pictorial maps." Sheet Width (in) 32.75 Sheet Height (in) 25 Condition Description Small spots of foxing and minor discoloration confined mostly to the margin in the upper right corner. Very good to excellent overall.
