The work is divided into three sections, the first of which consists of 129pp including 49pp of black and white illustrations plus 2 double-page maps of life and work in the sixteenth cehtury. The second section which covers the seventeenth century consists of 129pp including 49pp of black and white illustrations plus 2 double-page maps. Finally, the third section which covers the eighteenth century consists of 125pp including 47 black and white illustrations. The text to the first section has sporadic foxing; otherwise in very good condition. The price-unclipped dust jacket is stained to the title on the front cover and is lacking a number of small sections to the corners and edges with the result that the red boards are slightly faded in places.; in addition the rear cover has a closed tear down two-thirds of the book adjoining the spine.
