Signed by the Author. Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 515 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: This newly revised and expanded book tells for the first time the in-depth and detailed story of the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, which was fought on October 8, 1862. It has come to be recognized as one of the most important battles of the American Civil War and indeed the turning point in that war in the Western theater of action. The story begins with te Confederate invasion of Kentucky in August of 1862 and describes events which ultimately led the two opposing armies to the battlefield of Perryville. The battle itself is presented in great detail and is illustrated by numerous maps. Beginning in the early pre-dawn hours of that October 8, the Union army is found groping and skirmishing for the few precious water holes in the drought-stricken area around Perryville. Unaware that Gen. Buell and his whole Federal army is before him, Gen. Bragg orders an assault by his smaller Confederate army to drive back and crush the Union force. His plan was then to move north and join the other Confederate army under Gen. Kirby Smith near Salvisa, where he thought the real battle for Kentucky would take place. By nightfuall, Bragg has driven back the Federal army but only after great sacrifice and bloodshed. By now discovering the real strength of the Union force in his front, he retreats from the field. Neither side had gained a victory. Without a victory and without support from people in the state, Bragg and his Southern forces had to retreat South and leave Kentucky in Union hands. Perryville had been the battle for Kentucky.
