Soft cover. Condition: Fine. First Paperback Edition. A real nice clean unmarked 398 page first large paperback edition with 1 low in number line. Page count includes 12 pages of black & white photos. Has just a little outside wear and is very nice. Focusing on the Italian experience in this multi-ethnic city, Mormino and Pozzetta explore interactions among immigrant groups--as rivals, and as friends with common concerns. As they demonstrate, the extent to which immigrant groups cooperated in Ybor City was remarkable, in large part the effect of immigrant workers' strong sense of class consciousness and solidarity. Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), xiii + 368 pp. Fine in a Very Good+ dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges. From dust jacket: By the late nineteenth century Ybor City, envisioned as a company town by its founder, the cigar manufacturer Vincente Martinez Ybor, was a curious blend of Italians, Spaniards, and Cubans, all struggling to survive in the New World. Initially drawn to Ybor City by the burgeoning cigar industry, these immigrants put down roots and erected the institutions that would prove to be the foundation for a cohesive Latin community. The rich associational life in Ybor City flowed in part from the immigrants' heightened sense of class consciousness and solidarity. Anarchism, socialism, and communism thrived there in the early twentieth century. Ethnic group encounters occurred in a variety of contexts, ranging from militant labor unions, radical debating clubs, and consumer cooperatives to sporting team, mutual aid socities, and neighborhood celebrations. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Ybor City, Tampa, Hillsborough County, Cuban, Italian, Immigration, Americana, American History, American Manufacturing, American Business, U. S. History, U.S.-iana. zslic.
