First Edition
(Hardcover, 1927). 1927 first edition. Large 8vo (143 x 213mm). Ppviii(unpaginated),202. Decorative paper-covered boards, gilt titles to black cloth spine. Browning and foxing, spine titles faded, bumping and scratching to corners and edges. Born in Nova Scotia, Day won a Rhodes Scholarship, studying at Oxford in 1905. He served in the 185th Canadian Infantry Battalion during the First World War. Following injuries, he retired with his family to the village of Lake Annis in Yarmouth County, NS, where Day spent his time fishing, hunting and paddling the water ways of Yarmouth County. Concentrating very much on his love of fishing, this book recounts his childhood and youth exploring the waters around him, learning how to fly fish from experienced locals, and then his post-war fishing experiences with old friends and his child. The book resonates with his love for the Novia Scotia landscape and the fishing opportunties it presents. "The reader sees him through his final episode of fishing with his father before his father dies, as well as the First World War, during which time he 'never wet a line', and beyond, as he marries, builds a family, and continues to fish. Day's reflections suggest the restorative powers of the environment and should appeal to even those readers who have never thought to sit quietly by the side of a stream, line in hand, waiting." .
