Trade Paperback. Condition: Like New. Robert Mathias (Cover Design); John Atkinson Grimshaw (Cover Illustration) (illustrator). 397 pp. An excellent, spotlessly clean copy! Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially flawless copy with crisp pages, clean text, and very light shelf wear. Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publication in 1887. He was the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself, this including the Blanched Soldier, and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (The Musgrave Ritual and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Interesting account of New Zealand, well illustrated with many colour and monochrome photos. Focused on the relationship between the US and New Zealand. 'It is easy to say that the two countries have a lot in common. This book attempts to bring that nebulous statement into sharp focus, to define the commonality of history, trade, technology and shared values. The spirit of New Zealand and the spirit of America meet in the love of freedom, of individual achievement and of overcoming, like Richard Pearse, the obstacles in our path to common prosperity.' Chapters include: The Spirit of New Zealand The Lure of New Zealand The Green Country The Face of America in New Zealand Wellington and San Fransisco Original Technologies in New Zealand The Special Challange of Isolation Directory of Contributors Credits Malcolm Sheffield established Sheffield House Publications in the late 1970s. Under this brand, from 1979, he produced a series of books entitled 'This is New Zealand.' Their purpose was to promote New Zealand exporters, businesses, lifestyle, landscape, arts etc. Sometime they also featured other countries such as the USA, Australia, and Singapore. The firms involved with each publication recieved the finished book to give out to clients, particularly foreign clients, as a means of promoting New Zealand achievements and potential. Heavy. 192 pages.

Cambridge University Press, 2001 Bound, cloth with original dustjacket, xii+233pp., 16x23.5cm., ills. in b/w., in very good condition. ISBN 9780521800198. In the ten years preceding publication, the known solar system more than doubled in size. For the first time in almost two centuries an entirely new population of planetary objects was found. This 'Kuiper Belt' of minor planets beyond Neptune revolutionised our understanding of the solar system's formation and finally explained the origin of the enigmatic outer planet Pluto. This is the fascinating story of how theoretical physicists decided that there must be a population of unknown bodies beyond Neptune and how a small band of astronomers set out to find them. What they discovered was a family of ancient planetesimals whose orbits and physical properties were far more complicated than anyone expected. We follow the story of this discovery, and see how astronomers, theoretical physicists and one incredibly dedicated amateur observer came together to explore the frozen boundary of the solar system.
