1st trade paperback printing. "Literature as Revenge in the Lives and Works of Virginia and Leonard Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, Henry Miller and Djuna Barnes." DeSalvo examines biographical material that demonstrates how each of these authors exacted revenge through writing fiction: Barnes's play was a thinly disguised portrayal of the sexual assaults she suffered from her father and brothers; . Henry Miller wrote 'Crazy Cock' out of his obsessive relationship with his wife, June; Hermione in Lawrence's 'Women in Love', was based on Lady Ottoline Morrell and Leonard Woolf's novel 'The Wise Virgins' portrayed a thinly disguised Virginia as deranged and sexually inadequate. Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Book (illustrator). One of many "little magazines" that sprang up in the 1920s and 30s, this one devoted to the anti-industrialization ideas of Lawrence, whose "Letter from Germany" of 1934 is reprinted here: "The feeling never relaxes. As you travel up the Rhine valley, still the same latent sense of danger, of silence, of suspension. But something has happened to the human soul, beyond all help. The human soul recoiling now in unison, and making itself strong elsewhere, beyond all help." Our copy has a large vertical tear in the black wrapper, close to the front hinge, running half way down the front cover. In addition there is damage to the paper spine, with loss of 2 inches at bottom and an additional chip is gone on top, none affecting the text. Inside this copy is clean and fresh except for pencil comments, extensive in the margins of an essay by Derek Savage, whose remarks seem to have annoyed the reader.
