Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. No Jacket. Kredel, Fritz (illustrator). Possible First. Illustrated Junior Library collection of Grimm brother's fairy tales copyright by Grossett & Dunlap in 1945, Library of Congress nuimber 46-25002. Translated by Mrs. E.V. Lucas, Lucy Crane and Marian Edwards. Colour plates and black and white drawings by Fritz Kredel. Tan boards with ?1940ish design of alternating blue-green G's and brown swans, blue-green and tan spine with heraldic looking swan and G and laurel emblem. No dust jacket. Rus coloured dye to top edge. Attractive medieval looking endpapers with knight bringing captured/dead dragon home.Look like water coloured illustrations for the colour plates. A child (presumably) has taken a red pen to the back endpaper and rear blank pages as well as the front board, but (presumably) was deterred before accomplishing too much damage! Boards somewhat soiled and front hinge is broken, although binding and spine are good so far. There is slight browning of pages, a price written in felt pen (!) on front endpaper and a crease/small tear on Contents page. Still a stable and solid book. We complain about Grossett & Dunlap, but just think of the books we would not see without them!.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Szyk, Arthur; Kredel, Fritz (illustrator). Reprint. Two Volume Set from 1945, originally came in a slipcase, but this is NOT present here--just the 2 books, no DJs as issued. The Andersen volume contains 29 tales, translated from the original Danish by Mrs. E. V. Lucas & Mrs. H. B. Paull, with delightful illustrations by noted Polish children's book illustrator Arthur Szyk. In 343 pages with illustrated frontispiece, 9 full-color-full page plates (suitable for framing, if desired), multiple pan-and-ink illustrations throughout text, & full-color endpapers. The Grimm volume has 55 stories, with 373 pages, color frontispiece, 9 color plates, & illustrations throughout text by German illustrator Fritz Kredel. Both books are cloth-covered hardcovers (Andersen = green, Grimm = burgundy) with paper paste-down illustrations to front covers & gilt lettering to spines. Both are in VG condition (the Andersen VG+): exceptionally clean & bright, bindings tight & square, pages mildly tanned, more noticeably to edges, but completely unmarked. Exterior show minor rubbing to extremities, heavier in places on the Andersen. A lovely set & a great introduction to these classic fairy tales! Our photos depict the exact books you will receive--never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Condition: Near Fine. Kredel, Fritz (illustrator). Kredel worked with Koch before coming to the United States. This was his first book for George Macy. The illustrations for the tales adorn all of the stories, and are vignettes drawn in ink with two or more colors hand applied to each one. The result is one of the most charming books the LEC ever produced! Book is in near fine condition, with very light rubbing along the corners and the head and tail. The spine is very lightly and evenly sunned. The slipcase is entire, but has had some tape repairs. Copy number 522 of 1500. Signed on the colophon by the famed German book designer Rudolf Koch and also the artist Fritz Kredel. Full brown pebbled leather with the title in gold on the spine and the initials B G (for Brothers Grimm) flanking an ornament.
