Hardcover. Condition: Good. Bohny (illustrator). Second Edition. Large oblong folio. Bound in pictorial design which is hand painted on paper, the paper laid onto the boards as issued. Printed title, preface leaf, and 36 full-page hand-coloured lithographed pages, printed on rectos only, 24 of which bear three strip illustrations, the remaining 12, have two strip illustrations. Original cloth-backed hand-coloured pictorial boards. Collated and complete. Cover very rubbed and worn at corners and edges; cloth spine renewed with red cloth. The endpapers have been replaced crudely with bright white modern paper; the title page has old tears and creases with pieces missing, again this has been crudely laid onto modern bright white paper; the preface edges have been professionally repaired with japon paper. However inside the hand coloured pages are fresh and clean and in excellent condition. It is just a pity that an amateur restorer has restored the endpapers and title page. An important children's book first published in Edinburgh in 1858. Size 27 x 37cm (10.5 x 14.5 inches).
