Book
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Reissue. 1990 reissue of 1944 original, with a new afterword by Arthur Bishop. Faint edge wear. First published in 1944, Winged Peace is the story of aviation, and its future as seen through the eyes of Canada's leading fighter pilot ace in World War I. From Kitty Hawk to B-29 Superfortresses, Bishop shows us how the world had changed geographically, socially, economically, and politically. Bishop wrote Winged Peace during the darkest years of World War II, when Germany had perfected flight for conquest. He examines air power as an instrument for death, as well as the advances in peace and betterment for all that flight is capable of making. There is no greater testament to the imagination and resourcefulness of people than the incredible development and growth of aviation technology in this century. Bishop recognizes this and also the need for international control of air power: 'holding under closest control the means to destruction inherent in aviation and developing our aviation for the good of all mean and the peace of world.

Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Will Garfit (illustrator). First Edition. b/w. map end-papers; tipped-in, colour frontis. drawing of the author by Will Garfit; Cley has been described as 'the Mecca of ornithologists for the last 140 years', and Billy Bishop was warden of the Norfolk Naturalists' Trust Nature Reserve at Cley from 1937, eleven years after it had been started, until his retirement in 1978. His memoirs are a fascinating account of a world which has changed dramatically, from the days of the Gentleman Gunners whose great objective in life was to shoot the rarest birds for their collection, but who had an unrivalled knowledge of their subject, to the modern methods of conservation and management of habitat. Billy Bishop has some marvellous stories to tell, both of past characters, gunmen and wildfowlers, and of the birdwatchers and photographers of today. But his book is also the story of the successful creation of a superb reserve, and of the many unusual birds which have been seen there. A checklist of the birds sighted at Cley, with brief notes on their rarity, is included, as are extracts from his diary as warden, with the highlights of forty years' work, including the return of lost breeding species such as the black-tailed godwit, the avocet and the bittern, and the story of how an injured bittern which he had rescued helped to solve the vexed question of how bitterns boomed. This delightful book will be a must for the birdwatcher, but will also appeal to a much wider audience. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 133 pages. slight loss of colour to spine; now in archive acetate film protection. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Previous owner's book-plate {James Day) inside front cover. Card covers, 223pp, b&w photos. Light wear to card edges; a very good copy. Canadian William Bishop, volunteered for imperial service as a cavalryman. A brief encounter with aircraft - the cavalry of the clouds - and a prolonged encounter with mud persuaded him that his war should instead be fought in the skies with the RFC. Bishop flew first as an observer and eventually, on winning his double wings, as the pilot of a 'Scout ' - the famous early fighter aircraft of the pioneering dogfight days of aerial combat. The lives of pilots over the Western Front were perilously short, but Bishop had found his vocation and he began destroying enemy aircraft with a ruthless efficiency. His final total of 47 kills established him as a notable allied 'ace' and earned him a succession of decorations including the Victoria Cross. Through a combination of skill and good luck, he survived his combat experiences to be the author of this first-hand account, written while the war still raged, of the WWI in the air from a pilot's perspective.
