All the animal tales from eight books are here, along with the illustrations which originally accompanied them. After the first volume appeared in 1880, Joel Chandler Harris was deluged with letters from readers all over the country asking for more and more stories of Brer Rabbit and his friends ~ so for the remaining years of his life he collected and wrote them. Always a humble man ~ and modest to the point of shyness ~ Mr. Harris found it difficult to accept the enormous acclaim which his Uncle Remus stories brought to him. As a storyteller he was extraordinarily gifted ~ though he would have been the first to say that all he did was to repeat what he had heard. That he surely did. From the time he was a small red~haired boy growing up before and during the Civil War on a plantation in Georgia he listened carefully to all the stories he was told. And he never forgot what he had heard ~ all the detail, all the intricate variations of this peculiarly rhythmical dialect he remembered and wrote down to sound as nearly like the original telling of a story as he possibly could. As a printer's devil on Joseph Addison Turner's weekly publication the Countryman, he learned much about how writing was put together. His memory was incredible ~ as was his perception of the world and the persons and animals that peopled it. There is rare insight, humor, candor, pathos ~ and wisdom in his tales, and an even rarer quality of subtle understatement. These stories and the characters that make them have lived to entertain generations of children ~ and they will continue to do so. Richard Chase, the noted folklorist, himself a teller of tales, and the author of Jack Tales, Grandfather Tales, Wicked John and the Devil, and Jack and the Three Sillies, was the ideal choice of compiler and editor for this volume. Blessed with a sensitive ear for language and song, he is a man with a deep respect for "the old ways" in the folk arts of our own culture. In addition to this he has lived and worked most of his life in the mountains of North Carolina where the collection of just such homey and genuine tales as Mr. Harris's has been his preoccupation. So it was with an unusually sympathetic spirit that Mr. Chase approached the compilation of this book, and his occasional footnotes and word definitions are a real contribution toward the understanding of the dialect.
